From Alan Grant of ESPN.com:

"But this guy just referred to a group of people as collectively brain-dead. Not only does he think Caribbean players are stupid, he said as much. Can't get any more racist than that."

So apparently some people really do think that making derogatory remarks about individual members of a group is actually a commentary on the group as a whole. So when I complain about being stuck in a house with several annoying, self-centered Norwegian girls for several days that means that I think all Norwegians are annoying and self-centered. So either Grant assumes that what is true of the individual is true for everyone or he assumes that the radio-host is too stupid to not think so. Either way, doesn't reflect too well on him.

This is what Krueger's full Cream of Wheat quote was:

"Alou is losing his marbles. He has tried everything. His philosophy, combined with the front-office philosophy in his ear, he doesn't know if he's coming or going right now. He really doesn't. He's a brilliant tactician. He's a guy that has been around the game forever but right now -- I said it once and I'll say it again -- his mind has turned to Cream of Wheat. He's running out of relievers. He's trying anything and everything, it's not working. It's not working. I really don't blame him. He's secondary. The talent is garbage. Billy Martin wouldn't win with this group. The great John McGraw wouldn't get to the playoffs with the talent the Giants have this year ... "

He calls Alou "a brilliant tactician" with a shitty team. As far as all Caribbean ball players, on the same show Krueger was ripping Giants' management for not trying to sign Vladimir Guerrero when he was a free agent. Guerrero is a Dominican.

Alou may be honestly outraged, but he's not well-informed in this battle. I would not doubt that Giants' management wouldn't mind seeing someone so critical of the front office get yanked off the air.

Another public sacrifice for the corporate good.

"There's no way to apologize for such a sin"?! As Hobbes says, "you should save your hyperbole for when you really need it." Or as King Lear's fool might have told him: "Thou shouldst not have been old till thou hadst been wise." Let's just say that Alou hasn't provided wildly convincing evidence so far that his brain has not in fact turned into Cream of Wheat.

p.s. As a side note, since when has it become unacceptable to even portray individual members of the p.c. priviliged groups negatively, which if you think about it is a pretty discriminatory rule in and of itself?
